UM holds International Night to promote international exchange
MACAU, September 11 - The Global Affairs Office (GAO) of the University of Macau (UM) held International Night 2026, bringing together around 300 students from more than 50 countries and regions for an evening of cultural exchange and celebration. The event showcased UM’s vibrant international community and the appeal of its multicultural campus.
Speaking at the event, Rui Martins, vice rector of UM, said the university has seen a significant increase in new international students this year, with particularly strong growth in international postgraduate enrolment. UM’s international students now come from 63 countries and regions, reflecting the university’s increasing appeal to students worldwide. Martins said that UM is not only a place of learning, but also an important platform for cross-cultural dialogue. He encouraged students to make the most of UM’s diverse and inclusive learning environment, explore different cultures, and engage actively with peers from around the world.
International Night 2026 welcomed students from more than 50 countries and regions, including the Chinese mainland, Angola, Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, the British Virgin Islands, Cape Verde, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Mozambique, Myanmar, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, the US, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
The evening featured a variety of cultural performances by students from the Chinese mainland, Mozambique, Myanmar, and other places, including traditional dance and music. Students from around the world also dressed in their national costumes and competed for the Best Costume Award, adding colour and energy to the festive atmosphere. The performances and activities were warmly received, and the evening was filled with laughter and excitement.
UM has long regarded internationalisation as a core development strategy. The university adopts an international and modern governance model, uses English as its primary medium of instruction, and recruits faculty members from around the world, with 80 per cent coming from outside Macao. UM also encourages students to take part in overseas exchange programmes and gain international experience. This international and multicultural approach to education continues to attract outstanding students from around the world and contributes to a vibrant, culturally diverse campus. The construction of UM’s campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin is in full swing. UM will use this opportunity to further advance its internationalisation strategy, expand international student recruitment, and deepen international exchange and cooperation. The university will continue to provide students with a more international learning environment and broader opportunities for learning and exchange, while nurturing young talent with a global outlook and international competitiveness.
Guests attending the event included Zhang Dongbo, associate dean of the Faculty of Education; Cheang Wai San, assistant director of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences; Miao Li, head of the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management in the Faculty of Business Administration; Paul Pang, dean of students; and Cindy Lam, director of the Alumni and Development Office.
